The Complete Guide to Shooting and Mastering Your TikTok Videos

The TikTok application is specifically designed to make video creation and editing seamless and accessible for all users. There are a number of features to learn, but they are all intuitive and easy to apply. You have two main options: record a video live within the TikTok app, or upload a video you previously created and then edit it before posting. The most experienced TikTok creators often shoot their footage outside of the app for maximum control and then edit it for the highest quality. However, spontaneous, “on-the-fly” videos can also be very entertaining.

Shooting a Video Live in the App Start by opening the TikTok app and tapping the “+” icon on the menu bar at the bottom of the screen. This will take you to the recording interface. If this is your first time recording, you may need to grant the app access to your mobile device’s camera and video recorder.

You can set up several parameters before you begin shooting. The “Timer” feature is especially useful for hands-free video capture. You can also apply various beauty effects and filters. Once your choices are made, you’re ready to start recording.

Next, select your desired video length, either 15 seconds or 60 seconds. Tap the large, round red button at the bottom of the screen to begin recording. After you finish capturing your video, it is strongly recommended that you add background music. You can browse a library of short music clips available for you to include in your video. Once your recording is complete, tap the red checkmark to move to the editing page. At the top right of this screen, you can choose a different music clip, adjust volume levels, or mute the sound entirely. Finally, you can select a single frame from your video to use as the cover image that displays on TikTok, and you can apply other special effects using the two dedicated buttons at the bottom left of this page.

Uploading Existing Video Footage The process here is nearly identical, except you use a video already saved on your device instead of recording a new one. Tap the “+” icon as before, and then select the “Upload” icon located on the bottom right of the screen. You can then select your pre-recorded video clip from your mobile device’s gallery.

Using External Tools for Advanced Editing If your goal is to produce truly professional-grade TikTok videos, we suggest shooting your video outside of the app and then using a desktop video editor like FlexClip on your computer for more powerful, advanced editing capabilities. Many features are available through external editors that TikTok does not offer, such as adding smooth transitions, custom logos, and voice-overs. These tools also typically provide access to a larger selection of royalty-free music tracks.
